Moving on Marion: Workshop & Online Survey

The City of Winnipeg is undertaking the “Moving on Marion” study to look at “potential cost-effective improvements to safety, transportation, access, and community development and livablity on Marion Street from Lagimodiere Boulevard to St. Mary’s Road”.

This new study comes off the heels of an old one from a few years ago. This prior study on Marion was focused, more narrowly, on improving motor vehicle traffic. It resulted in costly suggestions that would conflict with a pedestrian-friendly community.

The stretch of Marion under consideration for this study is diverse. It includes mature communities, a mixed-use corridor and industrial land (see map). Feedback to the City on how to improve this street, from a mixed-use and pedestrian friendly perspective, are definitely needed.

The City is inviting the public to attend the workshop and participate online.

Format: Brief presentation at 6 p.m., followed by group activities

Right to Housing

Manitoba’s Right to Housing Coalition is holding a general meeting this month. The Right to Housing Coalition is a group advocating for  “housing for low-income people through strategies involving all levels of government as well as the private sector”.

Temporary Homeless Shelters

The City of Winnipeg has issued a request for proposal for a private contractor to remove temporary homeless shelters on public land. An activist group, No Evictions on Public Lands, has a online petition out with their reasons for opposing this.
