YIMBY Winnipeg is having our next organizing meeting this Friday (May 3rd) at 6:00 PM. We’ll be meeting on the 4th floor (Room 4BC58) of the University of Winnipeg’s Buhler Centre (460 Portage Avenue).
It would be great if you could bring any other supporters of infill, density and mixed-use development.
YIMBY Winnipeg has been increasingly active when it comes to advocating for mixed-use, walkable and dense infill. This has not been without significant controversy. As those who disagree with our vision become aware of our group, we’ll attract criticism. This is a positive sign that we’re getting things done and having an impact on the discussion.
As a group, we need to grow to take on increasingly complex campaigns to promote mixed-use, walkable density. That is why I encourage you to reach out to other supporters of dense, mixed-use infill development and walkable neighbourhoods for this meeting.
A key topic of discussion this meeting will be the proposed Planning Commission, which could change the governance of development in our city. Our initial guest speaker, a prominent advocate for a Planning Commission, recently informed us they had new and pressing commitments come up. We’re hoping to find a new speaker on the Planning Commission for this meeting.
YIMBY WINNIPEG RECENT NEWS & ACTIONS
- At the April 26, 2019 Appeal Committee YIMBY Winnipeg supporters came to speak out in favour of infill developments. We supported two lot splits in different mature, inner suburban neighbourhoods near major transit routes and amenities. Both developments were approved, with conditions. So a (small) win for density!
- On April 24th YIMBY Winnipeg’s interim spokesperson, Dylon Martin, spoke to Richard and Julie for The News on CJOB radio program. During this four to five minute segment, Dylon made the brief case for mixed-use density in Winnipeg. The clip is available through CJOB’s audio vault.
